Deep Geothermal Field Drilling Configuration

A two-rig geothermal drilling configuration that pairs a mobile crawler geothermal drilling rig for scattered production wells with a compact AC-VFD skid rig for deeper, higher-temperature reservoir wells.

Working condition profile

Geothermal field drilling combines weathered cover, medium-to-hard abrasive rock, fractured thermal reservoir zones, and intervals where formation temperature rises sharply with depth. Production and monitoring wells in this environment commonly run to 2000 m, while deeper reservoir appraisal wells can reach 4500 m with bottom-hole temperatures up to 180 C. Well pads are often scattered across hilly, ungraded terrain, so the fleet must move between pads without heavy crane support while covering both the shallower and the deeper end of a commercial geothermal well program. Returning steam and mineralized water additionally stress seals, hydraulics, and structural components compared with ordinary water well drilling.

Equipment selection

For scattered, shallower production and monitoring wells, the configuration uses the full-hydraulic crawler geothermal drilling rig ZDX-G2000, rated for a maximum geothermal drilling depth of 2000 m, with a maximum hoisting force of 200 kN, rated power of 216 kW (290 HP), and a 32 MPa high-temperature resistant hydraulic system. Its full-hydraulic crawler undercarriage is self-propelled at up to 3.0 km/h and grades up to 35 degrees, and the hydraulic circuit is specified for formation temperatures up to 120 C.

For deeper appraisal wells, the configuration adds the compact skid geothermal drilling rig GH4500, rated to 4500 m nominal geothermal depth with a 2400 kN maximum static hook load, a 900 kW main drawworks, ZP375 rotary table, and AC-VFD stepless variable-frequency drive. Its compact integrated derrick reduces the skid footprint, and the rig is engineered for formation temperatures up to 180 C. Both rigs are documented to API referenced practice, and the company quality system references ISO 9001, HSE, and API Q1. The product line is listed under geothermal drilling rigs.

Delivery & field capability

The crawler rig relocates between scattered pads under its own power with minimal mobilization equipment, while the compact integrated skid derrick shortens rig-up compared with a conventional bolted-up land rig. High-temperature hydraulic sealing and heat-dissipation modules are specified to maintain uptime through long steaming intervals, and the ambient working ranges cover most geothermal field climates. When sizing such a two-rig configuration, buyers typically match the lighter rig to pad mobility and the deeper rig to reservoir temperature and hook load, rather than forcing a single rig to cover both extremes.
