Trailer-Mounted Rig Configuration for Cold Regions

A cold-region drilling configuration: an 8000 m polar low-temperature rig with normal cold-start at -50 C, supported by a towed 3000 m four-axle trailer rig for winter field operations.

Working condition profile

Subarctic and polar onshore programs run year-round, with winter ambient falling to -40 C and below: engines will not start, hydraulic oil thickens, steel becomes brittle, and exposed water lines freeze. A standard land rig rated for -20 C is not acceptable in this envelope. Pads are linked by seasonal winter roads, so a trailer-mounted rig that a tractor unit can tow at up to 60 km/h fits the logistics better than a permanently skidded rig once the ground freezes solid. The work mix combines deep wildcat wells needing a very large hook load and drawworks power with shallower development and support holes.

Equipment selection

For the deep wells, the configuration uses the polar low-temperature drilling rig Aurora ZJ80, rated to 8000 m on 114 mm drill pipe, with a 5850 kN maximum static hook load, an 1800 kW main drawworks, and a ZP605 rotary table. Its super-heavy low-temperature resistant K-type derrick is engineered for a special working temperature range of -55 C to +45 C, with normal cold-start at -50 C ambient, and follows API 4F, API 7K, ISO 9001, and polar cold-region equipment practice. Drive is SCR DC, with optional AC-VFD.

For shallower development and support holes, the configuration adds the trailer-mounted drilling rig TZJ30, rated to 3000 m on 114 mm drill pipe, with a 1700 kN static hook load, 560 kW (750 HP) drawworks, ZP275 rotary table, and a high-strength hydraulic-lifting mast on a four-axle heavy-duty trailer chassis that tows at up to 60 km/h. It is rated for -35 C to +52 C operation. Both rigs belong to the trailer-mounted drilling rigs line.

Delivery & field capability

The -50 C normal cold-start specification removes the standby heaters and preheat delays that stall ordinary rigs through the coldest months, and the modular skid split structure of the polar rig suits cold-region transport and seasonal construction. The four-axle trailer rig efficiently uses the winter road network for the shallower hole program, towing at up to 60 km/h. Cold-region programs are best sized by specifying the actual winter ambient temperature and cold-start requirement up front, rather than relying on a generic land rig's ambient range, and matching trailer mobility to the seasonal road network.
